Putin finds alternative destination for Russian gas instead of Europe

The leader of the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, has apparently located an alternative destination for Russian gas moving forward, alongside the idea of it not going to Europe. This is described as involving tens of billions of cubic metres annually, based on a report by The Moscow Times.

At this stage, Moscow and Tehran are engaged in discussions centred around technical aspects of plans for Russia’s natural gas exports to the country.

“As for the amounts of possible supplies, we think they should begin with smaller totals, up to 2 billion cubic meters,” Putin said at a press conference following talks with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The official estimated it could eventually provide up to 55 billion cubic metres of gas annually to Iran.

Recently, media outlets are reporting that Iran is conducting private talks with Russia about implementing its nuclear program. Additionally, as previously reported, Russia and Iran are set to sign a strategic agreement on January 17. Notably, the document doesn’t acknowledge the Ukrainian regions currently under Russian control as being a part of Russia itself.

Taras Zahorodnii, a digital politics expert, noted on the RBC-Ukraine YouTube channel that the agreement won’t influence the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

This issue has important implications since, following the signing of an agreement between Russia and North Korea, North Korean servicemen have become involved in the conflict in Ukraine, with two of them recently captured by Ukrainian forces in the Kursk area.
