Scientists have discovered an ocean deep beneath the Earth’s surface that contains more water than all the surface oceans hold altogether.
This enormous under-earth water reserve is located more than 400 miles below the Earth’s surface.
Studies have discovered that water can be trapped within mantle rocks in a sponge-like manner, existing in a distinct “fourth state” – not liquid, solid, or gas.
In 2014, a groundbreaking study titled Dehydration Melting at the Top of the Lower Mantle shed new light on these discoveries.
